Jan 8, 2009 - He joined akatsuki to be close to Uchicha Madara since he knew he was still alive and to stay close to Orochimaru who was part of the organization at the time to make sure he didnt take sasuke cuz oro wanted either him or Sasuke for their sharingan. It was to keep an eye on the people that were a threat to sasuke, thats why he joined. Thats why as soon as oro left the organization they saught to kill him cuz of the secrets he knew but itachi wanted to kill him cuz he knew he was after sasuke.
